Patient Positioning

Patient lies on the opposite hip.

Probe Positioning

Place the transducer over the greater trochanter as a landmark and shift the probe to get an image with the gluteus medius in the left aspect and the greater trochanter in the right aspect of the image section.

Note: hyperechogenic areas of the gluteal tendons show calcifications, the hypoechogenic compressible structure represents liquid of the bursa
Note: effusion at the posterior facet of the greater trochanter in a patient with bursitis
