Submetatarsal bursitis

Patient Positioning

Patient lies supine with a small pillow under the dorsal aspect of the ankle.

Probe Positioning

Place the transducer on a longitudinal plane over the joints of the toe of interest.

Note: in normal conditions the submetatarsal bursa is not visible - in submetatarsal bursitis fluid superficial to the metatarsal heads seperate from tendon and joint can be detected.

Note: under pressure the fluid of the bursa is compressible
